Regulation for the Jimmy Woode European Jazz Award

Art.1 The Jimmy Woode European jazz award is carried out as part of the Tuscia in Jazz Festival in the Commune of Soriano nel Cimino.

Art.2 The award is meant for soloists or jazz bands from all countries with members under 30 years of age, and is open to all musical instruments and to singers.

Art.3 Participation in the Jimmy Woode award is free of charge. The requests for participation must arrive before aprile 30th 2012 (post stamp will be proof). The enrolment in the selection of the Jimmy Woode award shall be done by sending an audio CD of the band, with a presentation sheet of the band with all components (name, family name, date of birth)  and name of the band. The regulation admits that some members of the band may be over 30 of age ( n° 1 per trio, n° 2 for quartets or larger groups). This documentation shall be annexed with the request to participate and the audio CD:

Technical presentation sheet, band members with all relevant data, address, date of birth, phone contact ( please be clear for all country and local phone codes) and e-mail + artistic Curriculum

CD audio with a minimum of three compositions: standards or originals. One composition will have to be taken form the European Jazz real book (Sher Music co.) or must be composition regularly deposited for copy rights.

Art.5 Of all the requests for participation, the jury will select 14 semi-finalists that will play on stage in the Tuscia in Jazz Festival between 15/07/2012 and 21/07/2012. The international jury will choose among these the 8 finalists that will compete for the Jimmy Woode award on  29/07/2012. The selection of the participants to the final phase of the award will be made exclusively by the Organising Committee of the award and the unquestionable/final evaluation will be made public to all candidates before may 30th 2012 by e-mail or phone contact.

Art.6 All participants regularly enrolled will be selected on the basis of the audio CD material. The selection process will decide who will participate in the final phase to be held on 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 July 2012 in Soriano nel Cimino., Italy (80 km north of Rome). The selected bands/soloists will play on stage for a concert of maximum 45 minutes in opposition to another group/soloist.  It will be compulsory to play on stage at least one standard taken from the European Real Book ( Sher music co.) Three original books will be provided for this purpose by Sher Music co.  At the end of the two concerts, one of the two groups will be eliminated while the other will go on to the final phase and concert to be held on July 29th 2012. Of the seven groups eliminated, one will be reconsidered for the final concert. The final concert will stage 8 groups / soloists on July 29th 2012 with 15 minutes each and two compositions to be played, one of which taken by the European Song Book (Sher music co) also available on site from the Organisation. The jury will provide its unquestionable/final evaluation and declare the winners of the 2012 edition. For finalists it will be compulsory to participate in the jam sessions after the concert.

Art.7 The programming of the Jimmy Woode award will be as follows:

15th July 2012, h. 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

16th July 2012, ore 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

17th July 2012, ore 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

18th July 2012, ore 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

19th July 2012, ore 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

20th July 2012, ore 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

21st July 2012, ore 22: N° 2 semi-finalist bands will play for the access to the final on the central stage.Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

Final Phase

29th July 2012, ore 22: N° 8 bands that have access to the finals will compete for the Jimmy

Woode 2012 European jazz award, on the central stage. Tuscia in Jazz Festival Soriano nel Cimino.

Art.8 The selection jury will be chaired by singer Shawnn Monteiro, daughter of the great double bass player of Duke Ellington, Jimmy Woode, and will be composed of Artistic director of the festival Italo Leali, Antonio Ciacca in charge of the programming at the Jazz at the Lincoln Center (NY USA), Mauro Dolci, director of the  direttore della “Tuscia in Jazz Live” label, and form the following musicians of international fame: Scott Colley, Antonio Sanchez, Donnie Mc Caslin, Flavio Boltro, Rick Margitza, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tony Monaco, Aaron Goldberg, Karl Potter, Giorgio Rosciglione, Gegè Munari, Aldo Bassi, Lucio Ferrara.

Art.9 During the final concert, the jury will assign the following prizes:

1° classified: Best band award: Trophy + Recording a CD with the Festival label and free adittance to master classes for the following year (tuition value 400 euros) Tuscia in Jazz Masterclasses.

2° classified Best band award:: Trophy + free adittance to master classes for the following year (tuition value 400 euros) Tuscia in Jazz Masterclasses.

3° classified Best band award: Trophy + free admittance to master classes for the following year (tuition value 400 euros) Tuscia in Jazz Masterclasses.

 Special jury prize for best talent

Moreover there will be a prize – free adittance to master classes for the following year (tuition value 400 euros) Tuscia in Jazz Masterclasses – for the following:

Best double bass / bass player

Best saxophone player

Special prize “Sandro Verzari” for the best trumpet player

Best piano player

Best voice

Best guitarist

Best drummer

Art. 10 Board and lodging expenses are in charge of the participants.

Art. 11 The Award organisers decline responsibility for all potential accidents that may derive from the participation in the Jimmy Woode award contest, either before, during or after the event.

Art. 12 Enrolling in the Jimmy Woode award implies full acceptance of this present regulation. The award announcement is published in Italian and English. In case of controversial interpretation, only the Italian text will be valid.
